The Pathology of Collecting

I think collecting is about control. Controlling a tiny world in which nobody has access to it.
The good thing about our collections is that we take the power to categorising it as we prefer. Then we became the kings of our particular kingdom.
I do believe every single person in the world is a collector. As we do collect all kinds of objects we do also collect memories.

  • When I was young did I collected anything?
  • What do I think about Compulsive Collectors?
  • It is a men or women hobby?

There is something that come to my mind every time I think about collectors.
What is the criteria they follow to categorise the objects?

  • Colour
  • Alphabetic order
  • Size
  • Shape
  • Location
  • Money value
  • Memories
This is a variety of videos I founded very interesting in which I founded reflect different aspects of collecting.

Every video a watched shows happy people living in armony with their collections. If something make you happy and you do not disturb to anybody why should be a Pathology?

In most of the cases there is a lot of money invested in collections. Do you need money to be collector? What about space? Some people required lot of space to keep their collection.

Unlikely Treasures

Collectors, archivists and obsessives: is there a method to their madness? UNLIKELY TREASURES features people who collect unexpected things like clothespins, platform shoes, etc, and intimate discussions about the compulsion to collect and the urge to create order out of chaos. You think staplers aren't worth collecting? Think again.

The Donald Kaufman Toy Collection

Widely considered to be the ultimate assemblage of antique and vintage toys in private hands today, the Donald Kaufman collection has fueled the fantasies of many a collector over the past five decades. Now the entire contents (in excess of seven thousand pieces) of that fabled collection will be made available to one and all, starting with a 1500-lot offering at Bertoia Auctions in Vineland, NJ, from March 19-21, 2009.

The 2 Million Dollar Doll Collection

Doll mad Kathy Libraty is barely visible amongst her astonishing collection of antique dolls - worth a whopping £1.23m. Every inch of the 52-year-old's home is filled with over 1000 of the figures she has been collecting for over 25 years. Mum Kathy is so obsessed with dolls she now has to smuggle new editions to her hoard into her home - past her husband who said 'no more'. But along with pretty daughter Elisa, 19, even hubbie Frank, 52, gets roped in to helping her repair and organise her vast assortment. Kathy's dolls - ranging from two inches to over three feet high - come from all over the world including countries like Germany, France and the Far East. Some individual models are over 170 years old and all cost between £30,000 and a meagre 60p. Included in the range are famous figures like Henry VIII and his six wives, Victorian dolls from the 1900s, voodoo dolls, and even some from the 1880s used to smuggle opium.

I hope you enjoyed seeing my collection and my Doll Room. My Husband built this room for me in the basement, its great because it doesn't get dusty or hot down.

Knitting ans Fabric shops in Dalston, London

Fabrications
7 Broadway Market
London E8 4PH
020 7275 8043

Fabrications is a gallery, shop and studio dedicated to textiles and design.  It is a particular favourite during the winter when people flock to buy wool to start knitting hats & scarves during the increasingly chilly

Dalston Mill Fabrics
020 7249 4129
69-73 Ridley Road
London E8 2NP

It is a cliché, but I can only describe Dalston Mills as an Aladdin's cave of fabrics.

They have an immense selection of fabrics from garish costume fabrics to delicate and elegant satins and lace, taking up every inch of the shop hidden at the end of Ridley Road Market

On top of all this, prices are very reasonable. There are few places I know where you have such wide choice without paying a fortune for that luxury.

Afrique Fabriks
134 Kingsland High Street
London E8 2NS
020 7241 5127

They have such a big range of patterned wax prints - some BEAUTIFUL colours and themes going on.

Of all the places I saw in Dalston selling these kinds of fabric, I think this place has the biggest and the best range.  And whilst they're expensive (and I think they bring in all the latest designs), I don't think they're THAT expensive.  They'll only sell you them in big sizes, but then you can do what you want with the cuttings and snippings.

Afrique Fabriks is a lovely place to look around, if you're round these parts looking for some interesting prints

Kilim
526 Kingsland Road
London E8 4AH

Kilim is a joy.  And I'm going to wreck the thrill explaining why.  From the outside, I thought it was a really kooky junk shop.  And it kind of is.  Certainly the window display is stacked full of tacky Jesus mirrors and religious memorabilia, jet black mannequins cleary borrowed from somewhere in Africa.  I'm loving it.

Knitting ans Fabric shops in Islington, London15 Camden Passage
London N1 8EA

Such a bright and vibrant little shop. Extremely inspiring, and full of too many things i want. What really caught my eye were some chunky turquoise knitting needles! Lucky me, my friend bought them as a christmas pressie, so i have to wait a bit, but they are worth it!

The staff seemed very friendly, and didn't mind me taking lots of photos.

The first object I pick it up from the exhibition at The War Museum is Mr. Hugh Munro being mauled by a Bengal tiger, December 1792
" I heard a roar like thunder, and saw an inmensetiger spring on Monro..." July 1793  "The Genthelman's Magazine"
It really capture my attention this piece.

At beginning of day, respect for Xmas shown. On both sides, fellows stood on the parapet & struck matches and shouted across greetings to each other.
When it got light, everybody strolled about, conversed with the Germans, exchanged souvenirs, played football and not a shot fired all day or night.

Propaganda
Printed Cotton handkerchief, c1951
This was made in Korea and sent from the Communist forces to UN troops at Christmas 1951. The message is typical of the Communist attempt to influence UN troops and the text around the border reads, 'From the Chinese People's Volunteers Korea 1951. Demand Peace! Stop the War! It's not disgrace to quit fighting this unjust war. Withdraw all foreign troops from Korea, leave Korea to the Koreans'.

As a theme I picked it up this series of war flags. One really have to see these flags in order to appreciate them. I see them as an enormous and significant piece of history. Most of them did not have any information to be recognize.

I really enjoyed the visit to this Museum, specially because I went with the preconceive
